What is Thread Count and Why Does it Matter?

Each piece in the Reys Fine Linen and Simply Sleep collections is made of pure cotton with a 200 and 300 thread count. But what does this mean for you?

Thread count refers to the number of horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It is a measure of fabric density and is used to indicate the quality of cotton bed linens.

Higher thread counts generally indicate softer and more comfortable fabric. However, thread count alone is not the sole determinant of fabric quality; the quality of the cotton yarn is also important.

Fabrics with higher thread counts, like a 300 count, are more durable because they are denser.

Extremely high thread counts can make the fabric less breathable, which might be uncomfortable in warmer climates. The 300 thread count is the perfect balance for the South African winter climate and our 200 thread count options are perfect for the summer season.

How Thread Count is Calculated

Thread count is calculated by adding the number of warp threads and weft threads in one square inch of fabric. For example, if there are 150 warp threads and 150 weft threads in a square inch, the thread count is 300.
